Description: 15” long binaural stethoscope with woven tubes connecting gutta percha chest piece (4”) to ear tubes. Tension on ear tubes is maintained by a spring device. Ear pieces are also gutta percha. The hinge is marked Dr. Cammann Stethoscope, Tiemann & Co. After the invention of the monaural stethoscope by Laennec, there were many modifications to make the device easier to use. Attempts to develop a binaural device were usually met with failure. The invention by Cammann was the first practical one and it achieved widespread use. This is a later version. Early ones used a rubber band to produce the tension for the ears. As new materials were invented the stethoscope improved greatly in form and utility.
