Description: Marie Sklodowska Curie, 1867-1934 and Pierre Curie, 1859-1906. This caricature was published in Vanity Fair, December 22, 1904. It shows the public fascination with radioactivity as a source of invisible energy, and a complete lack of awareness of its danger with Pierre holding it up in a test tube. It is also an interesting social commentary. Marie is depicted as the dutiful wife, hand on Pierre’s shoulder from the back, while he holds the radium and is the dominant figure in the print. The print is signed with the initials JMP.
